Career Workshops

More than just a pastime, some gamers may be enticed to pursue esports professionally as a career. To support this, SCOGA directly organises and collaborates with partners to bring about career-focused workshops, with the purpose of raising awareness for the esports ecosystems and the diverse career opportunities it offers. These workshops could be in the form of standalone workshops from SCOGA, or collaborations with partners such as media corporations to allow the participants to take a deep dive into the industry.

Esports Journalism with Yahoo! Singapore

Attendees were exposed to the basics of journalism, roles, journalists’ best practices as well as different types of news reporting.

REPUBLIC POLYTECHNIC SCHOOL OF TECHNOLOGY AND ARTS’ WORKSHOP

Participants gained knowledge on the main topics - Understanding Game Design, Video Production for Esports and Staging Esports Events for Entertainment.

SCOGA ran a workshop on Esports Journalism with Yahoo Singapore. In the workshop, attendees were exposed to the basics of journalism, roles, journalists’ best practices as well as different types of news reporting.

The attendees came from various backgrounds, mostly coming from local polytechnics but also including families attending together. Out of these attendees, three were chosen by Yahoo as they showed potential and passion; they are currently working closely with Yahoo to assist them in writing articles about the local esports scene.

SCOGA ran a 3-day workshop on esports with the Republic Polytechnic School of Technology and the Arts, in which the participants gained more knowledge on the main three topics – Understanding Game Design, Video Production for Esports and Staging Esports Events for Entertainment.

For the first module – Understanding Game Design, the module looked into success stories of the most popular esports games, analysing the design and gameplay fundamentals behind them. Areas such as gameplay mechanics, modes of play and multiplayer dynamics were also covered in the module. The second module, Video Production for Esports, learners are taught to use video production techniques that are frequently used in the production of short-form content used to market and promote Esports activities and personalities. Finally, for Staging Esports events for Entertainment, there was a heavy emphasis on creating the environment for a ‘live’ Esports competition in order to maximise the excitement of the event visually and sonically, whilst engaging both ‘live’ and virtual audiences.

Throughout this workshop, the participants could experiment with skills that they could apply directly into their line of work and academics.

Self Enrichment and Social Engagement

SCOGA also uses esports to enrich lives in the field of self-enrichment and social engagement. With our active partner, Mellow & Tale, we combine effective counselling services with training and digital mediums such as video games. We hope to encourage the workshop’s participants to incorporate gaming into their lives as a positive boost, allowing them to perform optimally in all aspects of their lives and achieve true potential.

This after-school programme for students from disadvantaged backgrounds aims to closely support and supervise students to boost their confidence, self-esteem and encourage an improvement in attendance.

Other than raising awareness towards healthy esports as a pillar of cyber wellness, this workshop also shows an empathetic perspective into youths gaming and different ways to support these youths to healthily pursue this activity.

Gear-Up is an after-school scheme for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. This programme aims to closely support and supervise students to boost their confidence, self-esteem and encourage an improvement in attendance.

In this programme, students are able to bond with their peers over games and esports, as well as become more aware of their strengths and how to utilise them. Along the way, the programme aims to instill important soft skills such as communication and emotional management.

SCOGA hosted one of the pillars under the Teachers’ Conference and Excel Fest (TCEF) 2023. With the focus on cyber wellness, our workshop aimed to give an overview of the esports ecosystem, offer the participants an interactive experience of gaming through a diverse set of games prepared, and tackle difficult conversations and discussions about youths and gaming.

The workshop was facilitated by SCOGA’s trainers in collaboration with Mellow and Tale, and had three main zones which each served a significant purpose. First zone is Game–based learning, which aims to show the teachers that games can inculcate important soft skills in the youths such as clarity in communication and teamwork. The second zone is Hands-on with
CS:GO, a hands-on experience for the teachers to interact with the popular esports title. The third zone is Understanding Youth’s Motivation to Gaming, which takes a deep dive into how gaming fulfils some of the youths’ most basic needs, and encourages the teachers to view the relationship between youth and esports from the lens of empathy and curiosity.

Through this workshop, we hope that our participants have gotten the chance to discuss and reflect on how we could further support youths in esports.

Awareness and Exposure Workshop

SCOGA’s awareness and exposure workshops, which come in various forms including being a part of an official institution’s syllabus, aim to remove the negative stigma surrounding gaming, raise awareness of the benefits healthy gaming could bring about, and incorporate hands-on exposure for the workshop participants to get a holistic experience. Our trainers are also mindful of their diverse target audience and tailor the syllabus accordingly to best fit the target audience’s needs.

As a four-hour programme, this module in ITE College Central instills both the theory and the hands-on skills of esports in students.

With the focus on cyber wellness, SCOGA hosted one of the pillars under the TCEF learning journey, offering a holistic view of esports.

The ITE CC S&W Module, developed by the Esports Academy, it’s a 4-hour programme which aims to give the students a holistic glance into the esports industry. This programme was designed to emphasise the different aspects of esports, including the esports ecosystem, career opportunities outside of being a professional gamer as well as the foundational skills needed. The module also has a unique method to highlight important soft skills such as teamwork and communication through direct interaction with popular esports titles.

This programme is a weekly rotation of 2-hour slots each where two main parts – the theoretical understanding and the practical application – are covered. The former is formatted as a 2-hour lecture where students get to know more about popular esports titles in Singapore, local esports heroes, and explore diverse job titles in esports beyond professional gamers through an interactive card game.

The latter is where the students can experience a structured, hands-on lesson in the ITE CC Esports Centre itself. In this tutorial-styled session, the students are introduced to the hardware and software used in the centre. They then get a chance to train up the technical skills used in esports games before delving into discussions about the soft skills required to excel in esports.

This programme also introduces the CC Esports Club and its committee members for interested students to sign up, should they wish to further explore their potential in esports and deepen their knowledge about the industry.

This workshop aims to introduce a positive perspective towards healthy gaming for youth caretakers and game-based learning

This 5-day bootcamp gives the youths an intensive experience which combines both physical activities and popular esports titles

Level Up! Train-the-Trainer (TTT) is a workshop conducted by the Esports Academy to raise awareness about the benefits of healthy gaming to the youth centres’ staff members, who range from social and youth workers to counsellors and program executives.

With open discussion of topics that touch on social stigma towards gaming, as well as the potential of esports and its application in education and as a career trajectory, the workshop aims to rationally ease the concerns of (youth support network people) regarding gaming to introduce a positive perspective towards healthy gaming and dispel the misunderstandings around it. A lot of topics are covered in-depth in this workshop, such as:

1. Esports familiarization
2. General habits and behaviours of teenage gamers
3. Internet and gaming disorder in Singapore
4. Support youth gamers
5. Engaging youths through games via building a gaming community
6. Using games to promote and guide personal/character development

SCOGA engaged XCL World Academy for a 5-day holiday bootcamp to engage youths aged between 13-16 about esports. The Bootcamp allowed the youths to experience both popular esports titles and physical sports activities.

Some of the content that was covered included team building games, sports activities, theory crafting and strategy, and practice. In team building games, for example, the emphasis was placed on the interaction between team members which allowed the students to internalise more about positive team culture and rapport. The game-based learning approach used in the Boot camp also aimed to develop the students’ soft skills. For sports activity, the value of sportsmanship was the main highlight, one that remains consistent in both physical sports and esports. In theory crafting and strategy, the students learned how to critically analyse gameplay and opponents before using the information to apply to their practices and scrims.

Lastly, the youths combined all of the skills that they have learnt into practice as they participated in a tournament finale. Through the program, the youths gained various exposure to esports and also learned about the importance of a disciplined, structured, and healthy approach to gaming.

Coaching and Training

Whether it is for a competitive tournament or to upskill towards a professional path, SCOGA understands the need for some gamers to require a specialized route of training. With that in mind, we offer workshops with experienced trainers, who will provide in-depth guidance, analysis, and strategy for the participants to further enhance their strengths and develop their identified weaknesses.

This workshop analyses the determining factors of MLBB’s in-game strategy for tournament attendees.

The programme focuses on high-performance training for students preparing for competitive play.

The Mobile Legends: Bang Bang workshop is a part of Delta League, a tournament of popular esports titles. This workshop, developed and delivered by coaches trained directly under Esports Academy, gives a deep dive into the game’s intricate elements involving the implication of choosing certain characters, their unique powers, and other aspects of the game that are the determining factors of one’s in-game strategy.

In this workshop, external guests were also invited to talk about their experiences regarding the game, giving the attendants even more insight into different strategies and their weaknesses and strengths respectively. Not just ending at the theoretical discussions, the workshop also involves ten attendants doing a live demonstration of a game as the onlookers watch and analyse the game for their own learning points.

The workshops hosted at St Patrick’s and Woodgrove Secondary School aim to train the students for competitive play in various tournaments. These workshops mainly provide deep insights into the popular esports titles’ in-game strategies, such as Mobile Legend: Bang Bang’s characters, powers and ways to utilize these powers. This intensive and structured training allows the students to be able to grasp the key elements of the game in order to excel in strategy thinking and apply this knowledge to different kinds of play, as well as in real life.

The programme trains up attendees who wish to contribute to the esports system in diverse ways.

14-min

This rigorous, specially tailored programme aims to provide seniors a structured platform to experience esports.

The Incubator programme is a youth-oriented programme that aims to equip atendants with technical skills, competency and experience to potentially embark on the professional esports path.

This programme consists of three main tracks: the High-Performance Track (HP) which specialises in an individual’s or team’s esports performance, the Media and Operations Track (MO) specialising in technical knowledge required to recreate an encore esports event, and the Social Service Track, which trains the Youth Befrienders to interact with the youths and lay the groundwork for the promotion of esports. Within the minimum duration of 6 months, the lessons will be conducted once per week on a 3-hour per session basis.

Through this programme, the trainers hope to provide a conducive space with latest updated equipment and setups for effective learning and training, specialised training paths for the atendees to maximise their knowledge and skills absorption, strong support from industry professionals and an opportunity to seek job options within esports.

The benefits of gaming do not just apply to youths, but also extend to other age bandwidths. Understanding this, SCOGA is working together with Lien Foundation to introduce gaming to seniors. On top of the recognised cognitive benefits that gaming may bring about, this initiative also aims to bridge the intergenerational gap to further enhance the bond between seniors and youths.

This programme is led by our certified trainer who will address the transfer of knowledge through practical aspects during contact time, taking into consideration our target audience. The syllabus includes introducing the seniors to CS:GO, its game objectives and win conditions, as well as getting the seniors to master the most rudimentary techniques of the game, including the fundamentals of moving with WASD and learning about maps. The course also aims to remind seniors to play safely and healthily, with injury prevention and right posture guidance.

Besides this, the programme aims to target the seniors’ physical fitness to ensure their optimal performance during the game, using fitness-related esports titles to safely encourage the seniors to move around and warm-up.

Other than the cognitive and physical benefits reaped from engaging in esports, SCOGA hopes that this programme gives the seniors a social community to bond over a mutual interest.
